Considerations For LGBTQ Couples Seeking Therapy

The basics

What does LGBTQ+ actually mean?

It’s shorthand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning — with the “+” holding space for every identity beyond, including Two-Spirit, a term rooted in many Indigenous cultures across Canada.

This country has come a long way: marriage equality has been the law nationwide since 2005, and gender identity and expression have been protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act since 2017. And yet many queer and trans people still face rejection, discrimination, or plain loneliness — which is exactly where affirming counselling comes in.

How it works

Three small steps to someone who listens

You get a private, secure therapy room where you can write, talk, or video call — at whatever pace feels manageable.
Overcoming Barriers to LGBTQ Therapy

01

Tell us where you're at

A confidential five-minute questionnaire about your identity, what’s weighing on you, and the kind of counsellor you’d feel most at ease with.

02

Meet your counsellor

We introduce you to an affirming, registered therapist within about 24 hours. Not the right chemistry? Switch any time, free of charge.

03

Begin at your own pace

Talk by video, phone, or text — from wherever you feel safest — and message your counsellor between sessions whenever something comes up.

Why support matters

What our community is carrying

Being LGBTQ+ is not a mental health issue. But living in a world that doesn’t always make room for you can take a real toll — and none of it is yours to carry alone.

Before you begin

What challenges do LGBTQ+ people in Canada commonly face?
Even with strong legal protections, daily life can still include family rejection, workplace bias, barriers to affirming healthcare, and hate-motivated harassment. Those pressures accumulate. Counselling gives you one hour a week where you don’t have to carry them alone.
Yes. Identity isn’t something you grow into or out of at a certain age — many people sense their orientation or gender early on. Affirming support at that stage makes an enormous difference, and our counsellors include specialists in youth and family work.
It’s the ongoing, personal choice of sharing your identity with the people around you. It can feel freeing, frightening, or both at once — and there’s no deadline and no correct order. Your counsellor helps you decide what’s safe and right for you, on your timeline.
Absolutely. You don’t need a label to begin. Sessions are a judgement-free space to explore attraction, gender, and identity at your own pace, with someone who will never push you toward any particular conclusion.
In most cases, yes. Sessions with registered psychotherapists, psychologists, or Canadian Certified Counsellors are typically eligible under extended health plans like Manulife, Sun Life, and Canada Life. We provide receipts that make claims straightforward.
