Therapeutic Approaches Used for Online PTSD Therapy

The basics

What is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a treatable condition that can follow living through — or witnessing — something terrifying. Roughly one in eleven Canadians will meet the criteria at some point in their lives.

It can begin after a collision, an assault, a natural disaster, military or policing service, a frightening birth, or a medical emergency. The signs are familiar to anyone living with it: memories that arrive uninvited, avoidance of anything that echoes the event, broken sleep, and a body braced for danger long after the danger has gone.

When those symptoms last beyond a month and start reshaping your work, your rest and your relationships, that is PTSD — and it responds well to the right treatment.

Your questions about PTSD

What actually causes PTSD?
PTSD begins when the brain cannot finish processing an overwhelming event, so the memory keeps firing as though the danger is still present. Collisions, assault, military or policing service, medical emergencies, childbirth trauma and prolonged abuse are common causes — but any event that felt life-threatening can lead to it.
Yes. There is no single switch that turns it off, but trauma-focused therapy has strong evidence behind it, and most Canadians who complete a course of treatment see their symptoms fall substantially. Some people also work with their family doctor on medication alongside counselling.
Many clients report calmer sleep and fewer intrusions within six to eight weeks, though timelines vary with the type of trauma and how long it has been carried. Your counsellor will review measurable progress with you rather than leaving you to guess.
Please do. You don’t need a diagnosis to start. A first appointment can help you make sense of what you’re living with, and your counsellor will say honestly whether therapy, an assessment or a different kind of support fits best.
Most Canadian extended health plans cover registered psychotherapists, social workers or psychologists — coverage depends on your plan’s wording and your province. We issue itemized receipts, and direct billing is available with several major insurers.
