The basics

What counts as insomnia?

Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint in Canada: trouble drifting off, waking through the night, or surfacing far too early — and paying for it the next day. Roughly one in four adults notices symptoms, and about one in ten lives with the chronic form. Stress, anxiety, low mood, pain, medication, alcohol and rotating shifts can all start it, and long northern winters rarely help.

Staring at the ceiling for an hour or longer
Surfacing three or four times a night
Awake at 4 a.m. with no way back down
Foggy, short-tempered afternoons
Quiet dread as bedtime approaches
Leaning on naps, screens or a fourth coffee

How it works

Three steps to a quieter night

You’re matched with a sleep counsellor based on what your nights actually look like, then given a private therapy room you can use whenever sleep won’t come.

Your questions about insomnia

How does counselling actually improve sleep?
Most of our clinicians work from cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), the first-line treatment recommended in Canadian practice guidelines. Together you’ll steady your wake time, shorten the hours you spend awake in bed, loosen the thoughts that keep you alert and rebuild the link between your bed and sleep — without relying on medication.
Stress leads the list, followed by anxiety, low mood, chronic pain, perimenopause, alcohol, late screens and irregular shifts. Long dark winters and jet lag between provinces play a role too. Some prescriptions and conditions such as sleep apnea also fragment the night.
If trouble falling or staying asleep happens at least three nights a week for a month and your days are suffering — foggy thinking, irritability, dozing off at the wheel — it is worth speaking with a therapist rather than waiting it out.
Yes. Sleep apnea interrupts your breathing so the night never feels restorative, and opioids, steroids, some antidepressants and decongestants can delay or break up sleep. Tell your family doctor and your therapist what you take so the plan fits the cause.
Ask to switch, at no cost, whenever you like. Fit predicts outcomes more than almost anything else, so we’d far rather rematch you than have you push through with someone who isn’t right.
