The basics

What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition built on two parts. Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, urges or images that arrive uninvited and feel deeply distressing. Compulsions are the actions or mental rituals you perform to make that distress go away.

Relief from a compulsion is real, but it is brief. Each ritual quietly teaches the brain that the fear was justified, so the obsession comes back louder next time. That is the loop OCD counselling is designed to interrupt.

OCD affects roughly one to two percent of Canadians and often begins in adolescence or early adulthood. It is not about being tidy or particular — it is an exhausting condition that can consume hours of a person’s day.

Before you begin

Is OCD treatable?
Yes. OCD is a long-term condition, but it responds very well to treatment. Most people who complete a structured ERP programme see a meaningful drop in how often they ritualise and how much distress the thoughts cause.
Many clients notice a shift within six to eight sessions, and a typical programme runs twelve to twenty weekly sessions. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly and adjusts the pace.
We match you with a therapist registered in your province or territory, and sessions run online so location and travel are never a barrier.
Many Canadian benefit plans reimburse sessions with a registered psychotherapist, counsellor or psychologist. We issue itemised receipts so you can submit a claim, and we recommend confirming coverage with your provider first.
You always set the pace. Exposures begin with situations you rate as mildly uncomfortable and only move up once you feel steady. Nothing is done to you without your agreement.
